Liposuction is a surgical procedure mainly used to correct deep and superficial fat accumulations and remodel the body contour.
Liposuction surgery may vary due to many factors such as the patient’s preference, amount and type of fat to be removed, and according to the surgeon’s opinion.
In general all types of liposuction is performed under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (for a small area) or general anesthesia.
All the procedures have in common is the use of a cannula connected to a vacuum to suct the fat out of the body. The procedure takes an hour or two depending on how many areas of the body you’re getting done.
It is very important for the patient to prepare him/herself psychologically before liposuction. Knowing what you will experience after liposuction will be an extremely good preparation step.
You should know that you will have pain for a few days after liposuction, that you should wear a medical garment, that nutrition and sports should be part of your life, and that you will have drains after surgery.
Since you will receive anesthesia, you must come to the hospital hungry and follow other instructions given by your doctor.
The preparation process for liposuction operation is not different from other surgeries. After your blood pressure and temperature are measured, you will meet with the anesthesiologist and your surgeon and you will be taken into operation.
After the anesthesia is given, the treatment is started with the liposuction technique preferred by the surgeon.
In which area liposuction is to be performed, the fat is absorbed by small cannulas and removed from the body. If desired, this fat can be transferred to another area of the body to be plumped.
Fat removal surgery varies according to the area where the procedure will be performed and the amount of fat to be removed. The duration of the operation will also increase accordingly.
The surgery may vary between 1-3 hours depending on the conditions we have mentioned. After your operation is over, you will be taken to the recovery room.
You will be taken to your room after you wake up in the company of the anesthesiologist.
You might not have to stay in the hospital depending on the type of surgery. After liposuction surgery your surgeon may require you to wear a compression garment.
This will help to control swelling. Bruising, swelling, and soreness for at least a few weeks are expectable side effects of liposuction surgery.
The recovery time changes from person to person due to the type of surgery. Every person is different. Most people can return to work within a few days and get back to regular activities in 3–4 weeks.
After liposuction procedure your surgeon will ask you to take some antibiotics to prevent infection. Depending on the part where liposuction surgery was done there may be pain in the recovery process.
The pain during healing is in a mild way and can be controlled by painkillers. But if the pain increases it's important to report your doctor.
You may take shower after 48 hours after liposuction surgery. It's important to avoid soaking in a tub until your stitches are removed. Each time after taking shower put on clean bandages and reapply pressure garments.
Liposuction surgery comes with inherent risks. During liposuction recovery time you must pay attention to watch the signals to avoid liposuction complications. See your doctor immediately if you experience:
Increased swelling, bruising, or redness.
Severe or increased pain.
Headache, rash, nausea, vomiting.
Fever (temperature above 38 C).
Discharge from the incision that is yellow or green or that has a foul odor.
Bleeding that is hard to stop or control.
Loss of feeling or movement.
During recovery time and after; to keep your body in shape and increase duration of results you should follow a diet plan which include lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grain, low fat dairy products.
3-4 weeks after liposuction surgery its important to start a daily exercise program to keep the result permanent.
Actually, all seasons are suitable for liposuction. The advantage of the spring months is that it gives the person a recovery period before the summer.
If a fitter look is desired in the summer, it is possible to go to the sea or the beach easily after 3-4 months by having liposuction in the spring.
